While skin cancer is one of the less fatal types of cancer, it is still better to prevent it from ever developing since the survival rate for a person will be significantly better (100%, compared to 90-35%) if the affliction is prevented from ever happening in the first place. Here are some ways that will help keep you safe from skin cancer:
1. Always spot check your moles – the average person has an estimated 10 to 60 moles in his or her body, and there is a slim chance that one or several of these moles can progress into cancerous growth. Examine the freckles and the moles monthly for sudden changes, and contact a physician if you notice any new growth, radical discoloration or sores that don’t seem to heal.
2. Avoid direct exposure to sunlight. The sun’s UV rays are one of the most common causes of skin cancer, and as such, you should avoid raw sunlight during the times when the UV content is strongest (11am to 4pm). You should also be wary of clouds, since 80% of the suns UV rays can penetrate light clouds and fog, which means you can still get sun burns during cloudy day.
3. Avoid artificial sources of UV radiation. These include sunlamps and tanning salons, which contain as much as 2 to 5 times stronger UV radiation than natual sunlight, and can cause sunburn, premature skin aging, and of course, skin cancer. Children and light-skinned individuals are more prone to these things and should be adequately protected.
