Colon Cancer (sometimes referred to as colorectal cancer) is the second most common cause of cancer deaths among men in the US, but as commonplace and deadly as it is, colon cancer is actually easily preventable and curable when detected early. Unfortunately, early detection is hampered by the fact that there are lots myths associated with colon cancer, resulting in a lot of misinformation and misconception. Here are some of the more common myths:
1. If you have regular bowel symptom, you are safe from colon cancer - nothing could be further from the truth. Colon cancer is a deadly, silent killer and there are times when there are no symptoms that will tell you if you are developing one until it is too late and the cancer is already at an advanced stage. There are always symptoms but they tend to show up in different places, so people with colon cancer will sometimes have normal bowel movements because the symptoms have shown up in different places.
2. You are safe from colon cancer if there is no family history of the affliction - false. Only 10 to 20 percent of people with colon cancer have a family member that has an acute colon cancer. Colon cancer is not hereditary and you can still get it even if no one in the immediate vicinity has it.
3. If you are diagnosed with colon cancer, it is too late and there is nothing you can do about it - again, false. Colon cancer is not only preventable, but highly treatable especially if caught during the early stages. So don’t be afraid to take regular exams so that if ever you are diagnosed to have colon cancer, the success rate of the treatment is greatly increased.
